Student of the Year

The purpose of the UBC Science Co-op Student of the Year Award is to recognize a recipient’s achievements in his/her job performance, academic performance, contributions to the UBC community or his/her employer, to Co-op education, to the general community and his/her involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Award

  • $500.00 cash prize
  • An engraved plaque
  • Opportunity to be nominated for the BC/Yukon Association for Co-operative Education (ACE) Student of the Year Award

Eligibility

  • The candidate must be a current UBC Science Co-op Student
  • The candidate has completed at least two Co-op work terms
  • The candidate has not previously won the award

Selection Criteria

The following criteria are used to evaluate candidates. Candidates are scored on a scale of 100 points. The value of each criterion is indicated in brackets. Top candidates with the highest scores will be asked to submit a letter of reference from their current or past Co-op employer. The selection committee will then review the portfolio of all top candidates and determine the final winner.

  • Job achievement (35) – technical contribution and evaluation from employer
  • Academic performance (20) – overall cumulative average of all undergraduate courses
  • Contribution to UBC Community and/or Co-op Education (15)
  • Contribution to extra-curricular activities and/or community at large (10)
  • Student personal statement (10)
  • Evaluator assessment and recognition of intangible qualities of candidate (10)

A candidate can send in the application himself/herself or be nominated by a fellow student. A Co-op coordinator from the Faculty of Science may also nominate students.

Nomination Package

Nomination package should contain the follow items presented in the order below:

  • Nomination Form
  • Personal Statement (2 pages maximum, 1 inch margins, 10 pt font min.) --- Outline how Co-op education has enhanced your career development, personal development, and academic experience. Where possible please be specific in your examples.
  • Resume – Co-op experience should be clearly identified with work term dates. Extra-curricular and community activities, scholarships and awards, etc. should also be noted.
  • Transcript - A current unofficial transcript printed out from the Student Service Centre website will suffice. If you have attended another post-secondary institution, please provide a photocopy or a scan of transcript.
