Megan Filiatrault » Biology
"During my Co-op terms, I learned how to communicate and collaborate effectively with other people in science, which is a key skill for any researcher. Learning basic technical skills in the lab also helped me gain confidence in my ability to perform experiments and learn more complicated procedures. Now, a few years after graduating from UBC, I work as the laboratory manager for the lab in which I started out as a Co-op student."
Kelvin Po » Biopsychology
"Co-op showed me the kinds of careers available in both academia and industry and helped steer me into the biopharmaceutical sector. It directly provided me with the relevant work skills needed to be employed after graduation as well as an insider's perspective of the industry in BC. The networking opportunities and contacts I have established have proven invaluable to my career development. I am where I am now because of my Co-op placements."
Siaw Hui Wong » Biotechnology
"Co-op allowed me to explore the different fields of biotechnology and experience both academic and industrial research. I also learned that great team work and the open sharing of knowledge is key to a successful research environment. Right after graduation I obtained a position as an assistant instructor in BCIT's Biotechnology program--because Co-op allowed me to gain so much experience. Furthermore, the program helped me realize how much I love to teach and be in the lab."
Samiul Shariff » Computer Science
"For me, Co-op provided more than just valuable work experience; it was a chance to make lifelong friendships and gain confidence in myself and my abilities. The people I met, from Co-op Coordinators to co-workers and to fellow students, were just so motivated and intelligent. It really inspired me to try my best and become a better student, employee, and person. This is a program that will change your life for the better."
Scott Nelson » Engineering Physics
"One of the reasons I went into Engineering Physics was to have plenty of career options. Now, Co-op is allowing me to explore those options before I finish school. With Co-op I can test drive each industry, something that's much more difficult to do after graduation."
Cornelia Laule » Physics
"Co-op is without a doubt the best learning experience of my undergraduate education. Seeing the practical application of things I had learned in class was great, and it gave me the opportunity to learn what life was like in both industry and research environments. Co-op helped me choose medical physics as my career and I am now doing a PhD with biophysicist Alex MacKay."
Kenneth Kwok » Atmospheric Sciences
"Before my Co-op placements, I had a very vague idea of the types of employment my discipline offers. Like the weather, the jobs in atmospheric sciences are very dynamic. Co-op helped me define operational meteorology as my career path and gave me the opportunity to network with people in the field."
