Statistics

Statistics Co-op prepares you for a career in statistics, data analytics, data science, actuary science and other related fields by connecting you with employers across tech industry, research/ academia and government. During 16 months of paid co-op experience, you will have a unique opportunity to develop your technical and interpersonal skills, gain real-life work experience and start building your professional network. With relevant technical experience on your resume, you’ll be well positioned to launch your career straight out of school!

We’ll run you through the application requirements, and then you’ll be prompted to create an account in SCOPE, the UBC Science Co-op Information System.

Application Requirements

  •  
  • Currently pursuing a Major in Statistics or one of combined majors with Statistics (BA or BSc). Note: Students pursuing a major in an unrelated discipline with a minor in Statistics are not eligible.
  • Have at least 30 credits remaining of your graduation requirement at the time of application
  • Have a minimum average of around B- (68%)
  • In process or have taken the following courses (or equivalent ones)*:
     
    • BSc Year 2 students: STAT 200, 302 (or Math 302)
    • BSc Year 3 students: STAT 200, 301, 302 (or Math 302), STAT 305 or 306
    • BA students: ECON 325, 326, 323 (323 is optional)
       
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, and a responsible, mature attitude  
  • Demonstrate leadership, teamwork and time management
  • Demonstrated interest in your chosen field  
  • Be flexible and willing to accept a work placement outside the Lower Mainland (in person or remote)

*The following courses are highly recommended: CPSC 210, 221, 213, 310, 313, 344*

*Both STAT 305 ar 306 are highly recommended to take in 3rd year rather than one in the 3rd and the other in 4th year.

Note: Completion of at least one technical project (academic/ personal/ Hackathon) is highly recommended.

The above schedule is highly recommended by the Co-op Program in order for students to complete their program within the shortest time frame. Alternate scheduling might be available in consultation with your Co-op Coordinator.

Admission Process:

  1. Applications are accepted via Scope by a specified deadline.*
  2. Applications are reviewed after the deadline and assessed based on the criteria above
  3. Shortlisted candidates are invited to intake interviews
  4. Official offers to join Science Co-op are announced (July for Spring Admission, January for Fall Admission)

*Note: Please ensure that you apply in the respective admission cycle based on your current year. Students in Year 2 that haven’t met year promotion criteria but are meeting co-op admission criteria for 3rd year are eligible to apply under Year 3 admission cycle.
